IN Memorium

A good person died last week, Mable Campbell. Mable was a good friend to me. She was first a Kentling, then a Campbell, and fiercely proud of it. She had an open heart to all animals, giving food and a warm bed to any strays, that happened by. She was a friend to countless Highlandville residents, as she had been for years. People who didn’t know her cannot begin buy a few word on a page. Those who did don’t need words. She finally made me understand those words before had always seemed menaingless - gone but not forgotten.

A Tribute to Mable Campbell, by Alice West Holt.

To speak of Mable Campbell was to speak of Highlandville - with her passing so has a era of Highlandville history. Being the only daughter of the eldest son of Frank and Katie Kentling, the founders of Highlandville, she was the postal service in the city for three generations.

She was born at Reno, Mo March 23, 1899. From the time she was nine years old, she ever was at her mother’s side in the store business. They moved to Highlandville in her early childhood, and as a young lady, she met Frank Campbell, also raised in the community, They married in 1917. Frank first worked with his father in a blacksmith shop, but later he opened a cafe. He spent most of his life trucking, but in later years, he ran a barber shop in back of the post office. He worked there until illness overtook him and he passed away in 1953.

Mable is survived by two sons, Paul of Highlandville and J. Wayne “Cookie” of Houston, Tex.; four grandchildren, Mrs. Pauline Firestone, Washington, D. C., Miss Suzanne Campbell, Miss Heather Campbell and Kent Campbell of Houston, Tex. Also surviving are two  great grandchildren and a brother, Carl Kentling of Wichita, Kan.

Mable served the community as postmistress for 48 years beginning August 11, 1921. She was 22 years of age. At that time, postage was 2 cents for first class mail and a postcard could be bought for a penny - this was in the days when Warren Harding was President.

An exciting time for Mable as shortly after she became postmaster, three boys from Springfield robbed the post office. But in no time, the postal authorities apprehended them. None the less, it was a most trying experience for the young postmaster.

When we would visit, Mable would recall that when she first took over the post office, the porch was a favorite gathering place for farmers to do their visiting when they came to town. IT also was a favorite place to discuss politics on election day.

Progress was made during her years in office. It changed from a 4th to a 3rd class post office in 1964. Three routes were served by the office: the Reeds Spring, the Ozark route and the star route and route one out of Highlandville.

Times changed moneywise, too. When Mable took the Office, the pay was $30 a month. When she retired in 1969, she was receiving nearly $7,000 a year.

One of our fondest memories of Mable was to see her on a wintery day sitting back of the postal window in an easy chair. There by the wood stove, she would relax a moment - and one would find a cat in her lap. Cats became a loving hobby with Mable from the days of “Babe: her first constant companion at the Post Office until she had attained a numerous collection, housing and feeding them over the years.

Besides her cats, Mable made a trek most every day to the building that housed the Post Office during her Postmastery, where she maintained the Thrifty Shoppe for most of her remaining days. Its progress flourish a while as people brought in their wares. She sold several antique items, gifts, jellies, etc. but second-hand clothing got to be involved, time consuming job and very little profit; so she had to put a limit on how many and the length of time they were permitted to stay.

But, most of all, it was a place up town where she could visit all her friends. She liked the quiet serenity of our little town - from the last clang of hammer on anvil from Delbert White’s blacksmith Shop in the late 1930’s til the roaring thud of the City Water well drilled in the late 1970’s, quietness blessed the little town.

Even though she loved people, she dreaded growth and had no desire to see progress come and change that which seemed to make time stand still.

The last time I visited Mable, she was saying, “Not many come in anymore. So many have died, you know.”, speaking of her old friends. And, as I looked into the face of this ageless lady, who had changed to me so very little over the many, many years I had known her - with acceptance of a few facial wrinkles and graying hair; it was hard for me to accept that she, too, would soon not be coming to the little shoppe again.

But, you, it wouldn’t surprise me a bit if she hasn’t all ready opened up a little Thrift Shoppe in Heaven on Hallelujah Square - and that “Business As Usual” is going on up there. A crown of saints to meet her and welcome her in where they can visit forever, days on end. Yes, I can imagine a great homecoming and all are having fun; I doubt if she looks back to earth to miss us - nairy a one.
